Cougar Teams Compete for Final of Annual 7-A-Side Tournament
April 27, 2005
PULLMAN, Wash. - After competing in competitive semifinal matches, Washington State's team Gray defeated WSU's team Crimson 1-0 in the finale of the Cougars' annual 7-A-Side Tournament Sunday. The tournament, which took place April 24-25, featured 37 teams ranging from collegiate squads to premier Northwest club teams.
'It was a great way to wrap up our spring and the year,' WSU Head Coach Matt Potter said. 'To have both WSU teams compete in the final with the level of competition as high as it was is a wonderful accomplishment. The fact that both teams coached themselves allowed the staff to watch and evaluate what we have accomplished and what we still need to work on as we look forward to our fall season.'
A total of 91 games took place on the WSU campus last weekend with each game lasting 30 minutes and being played on a 65 by 50 yard fields. Despite typical Palouse spring weather, only one rain delay occurred in the two-day long event.
'I'd like to thank all those behind the scenes that made the weekend a success. It is because of their efforts that the 7-A-Side Tournament is a special event,' Potter added. 'The quality of both individual players and the competitiveness of the teams this weekend added to what turned out to be a great spectacle of soccer. I would like to thank all those associated with WSU athletics who took part in this event and made it happen.
'I am delighted with the efforts of all our players and it is a great platform to inspire us to continue the good work through the summer,' Potter added. 'We have much to look forward to and events like this weekend make for an encouraging and bright future.'
