Huskies Take Series Vs. UCLA With 3-2 Win

SEATTLE-- The 22nd-ranked Washington softball team used a sacrifice fly and two home runs to defeat 10th-ranked UCLA this afternoon at Husky Softball Stadium. The Bruins out hit the Huskies 8-6 but stranded 12 runners on base. Freshman Caitlin Noble earned her second win over UCLA in a week as she held the Bruins to four hits over five innings of relief. The Huskies improve to 25-15 overall and 5-6 in the Pac-10, while UCLA dips to 24-12 overall and 5-6 in conference play.
Senior Kathy Fiske got Washington on the scoreboard in the first inning with a sacrifice fly to right field. Freshman Ashley Charters led off with a walk and moved to third on a single by Dominique Lastrapes. Fiske then hit the first pitch she saw from Anjelica Seldon to right field to score Charters.
Lastrapes tacked on another run for the Huskies in the third inning with a home run over the centerfield wall. The blast marked Lastrapes' third home run of the season.
Freshman Lauren Greer, the Pac-10 Player of the Week, posted an insurance run for Washington with a fourth inning lead off home run to right field. It was her fourth home run of the season and her third in the last four games.
The Bruins answered in the fifth inning with a two-RBI single by Kristen Dedmon. Emily Zaplatosch led off with a single to right field and Jodie Legaspi reached base on an error. Lisa Dodd sacrificed the runners to second and third and Dedmon's hit into left field scored two runs to cut Washington's lead to 3-2.
Noble (12-7) sat the Bruins down in order in the sixth and allowed just one hit in the seventh to close out the game and earn her 12th win of the season. She pitched five innings of relief and scattered four hits and struck out two. UW starter Ashley Boek lasted two innings, giving up no runs on four hits.
Seldon (16-7) took the loss for UCLA despite 12 strikeouts. She gave up three runs on six hits and walked four.
UCLA squandered numerous scoring opportunities, leaving the bases load in the third and fourth innings and stranding two runners in the second and fifth frames.
The Huskies continue Pac-10 play this weekend when they host Stanford on Friday at 1 pm and California on Saturday and Sunday at 2 pm and 1 pm.
