LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Left-handed pitcher David Huff, currently a sophomore at Cypress Junior College, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball at UCLA. Huff, a native of Huntington Beach and a 2003 graduate of Edison High School, becomes the 14th player to commit to UCLA for the 2006 season.
'We are very excited that David has decided to become a Bruin,' Savage said. 'He will make a large and immediate impact to our pitching staff and we will look for him to be a frontline starter in our program.'
As a freshman at UC Irvine in 2004, Huff posted a perfect 3-0 record with a 3.00 ERA while appearing in a team-high 31 games. The southpaw made two starts and tossed 42.0 total innings. He struck out 26 while walking just ten.
This season at Cypress CC, Huff currently ranks 55th in the state with a 3.02 ERA. He has started eight games for the Chargers while posting a 2-2 record in a team-high 59.2 innings pitched. He has stuck out 67 and walked just nine. Cypress is currently 21-12 and in third place in the Orange Empire Conference.
Huff pitched for the Chatham A's of the Cape Cod Baseball League in the summer of 2004 and will return in 2005. His summer ERA of 1.09 was fourth best in the league. He also struck out 48 batters in 49 innings pitched. He was named the league's Pitcher of the Week on August 8.
Huff will enter UCLA this fall and will join the 13 other newcomers who have already committed to UCLA as part of Savage's first recruiting class. Several national recruiting agencies have already hailed the class as one of the country's best.
The complete 2005 signing class includes Corey Ashner, Ryan Babineau, Tyson Brummett, Brandon Crawford, Jermaine Curtis, Robert Dickmann, John Drennen, Blair Dunlap, Huff, Brian Kirwan, Tim Murphy, Eddie Murray, Jason Novak and Andy Suiter.
