April 29, 2005
LOS ANGELES - The No. 3 California softball team won its first series from UCLA in seven years, scoring all of its runs with two outs in the second in defeating the Bruins, 3-2, on Friday at Easton Stadium.
Cal first baseman Julie Meyer doubled off of UCLA starter Anjelica Selden (16-8) with one out in the second and scored on right fielder Alex Sutton's single. The next batter, third baseman Vicky Galindo, doubled in Sutton. Galindo later scored on a passed ball by catcher Emily Zaplatosch for a 3-2 lead.
A first inning two-run homer by Bruin second baseman Caitlin Benyi off of winning pitcher Kelly Anderson (22-4) accounted for all of UCLA's runs. Junior Kristina Thorson struck out two hitters in the final two innings to earn her second save of 2005.
It was the Bears' first series victory against their Pac-10 rivals since 8-1 and 6-0 wins in 1998. Cal had defeated the Bruins, 2-1, on April 9 before falling by the same score April 10.
Cal (41-8 overall, 8-5 Pac-10) resumes action at Washington on Saturday at 2 p.m. Cal's road trip concludes against the Huskies on Sunday at 1 p.m.
