Softball Falls to California, 3-2
April 29, 2005
LOS ANGELES - A first-inning two-run home run by Caitlin Benyi wasn't enough on Friday afternoon at Easton Stadium as UCLA fell to California by a score of 3-2. with the loss, the Bruins fall to 24-13 (5-7 Pac-10), while the Golden Bears improve to 41-8 (8-5).
After Vicky Galindo singled for Cal to lead off the first inning, two sacrifice bunts advanced her to third base, but the Bruins were able to keep the Bears off of the scoreboard.
In the bottom half of the frame, Tara Henry drew a one-out walk and came home when Caitlin Benyi took a full-count pitch from Cal's Kelly Anderson over the left field fence to give the Bruins a two-run lead.
Cal answered in the second inning with a double from Julie Meyer, who was sacrificed to third by Kristen Bayless and came home on an RBI single by Alex Sutton. Sutton came around to tie the game on a hard-hit double by Galindo, who went to third on the throw home. Galindo came home to score on a passed ball, giving the Bears the 3-2 lead.
That was all the offense Cal would need, although UCLA starting pitcher Anjelica Selden recorded her 300th strikeout of the season to lead off the sixth inning. She finished with eight strikeouts on the day.
UCLA returns to action on Saturday afternoon with a 2 pm first pitch against Stanford. The game will be televised on a tape-delayed basis by ESPN2. It will air at 6 pm PT on Saturday night.
