Crew Shows Improvement, Continues to Close the Gap on UW

April 30, 2005

SEATTLE, Wash. - Oregon State's Women's Rowing team took to the waters of Montlake Cut in Lake Washington in Seattle to challenge the 12th-ranked Huskies Saturday morning.

'Where we finished is a little disappointing, but we raced well and continue to show improvement,' said OSU head coach Charlie Owen. 'It just shows that we've still got some work to do.'

The Beavers, who had put in a hard week of practice, received outstanding performances from their 8's, with the Junior Varsity Eight coming the closest to an upset.

In that match-up the Huskies pulled ahead by nearly six seats early during the first 500-meters, but the Beavers were able to recover and get even with the Washington boat with 300 meters to go. UW was ready to finish the race though, sprinting back to claim the victory by just over one-second.

Oregon State's Varsity Eight also had a strong showing, despite the results of the race. Coming off of a strong week of practice, the Beavers' top boat rowed well and showed improvement, but came out 10-seconds behind the 12th-ranked Huskies.

OSU's Novice Eight put in a solid effort, with the race starting in a similar manner to the JV race. The Huskies quickly tried to gather an early lead, but the Beaver rookies weren't having it and moved back to keep the race close. Despite being on its own home course, the Huskies could only muster a three-second victory.

OSU returns to competitive action May 15 at the Pac-10 Championships on Lake Natoma near Sacramento, Calif.

'We'll be out there working hard this week, changing some lineups to get ready for Pac-10's,' said Owen.

Saturday's regatta marked the end of the season for the Second Novice Eight and the Novice Four do to the Pac-10 Championships not including those events.
