Lissman's Homer Keys OSU's Baseball Win

April 29, 2005

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Mike Lissman's three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning sparked No. 11 Oregon State to a 6-5 comeback win over No. 20 Arizona State in Pacific-10 baseball Friday evening at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The Beavers (31-7 overall, 10-3 Pac-10) trailed 2-0 until Lissman's homer started a string of six straight OSU runs over the fourth and fifth innings before a season-high home crowd of 1,791.

With the win, the Beavers matched their overall and Pac-10 win totals from the entire 2004 season. Coupled with Southern California's win at Arizona, it moved Oregon State into a first-place tie with UA in the Pac-10 standings, a game ahead of both ASU and USC.

OSU and Arizona State (28-16, 9-4) continue their series on Saturday at 1 p.m. and conclude it on Sunday at 1 p.m., and both games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240) and www.osubeavers.com.

On Friday, Dallas Buck pitched into the seventh inning for the win to improve his record to 8-1 for the Beavers this season and Kevin Gunderson got the final nine outs to record his eighth save. Jacoby Ellsbury extended his hitting streak to 20 games with a 2-for-4 night, his 21st multi-hit game of the season.

'We got down in the first inning, and our guys rebounded from it,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'Arizona State is a great ballclub.'

Said Gunderson: 'There's been a lot of hype leading up to this weekend. They're a top-25 team and we're a top-25 team. I think they came out for a little revenge after we took it to them in February (in a 12-6 non-conference win at ASU). The first win always jump-starts a weekend.'

And that first win was jump-started by Lissman. With the Sun Devils building that 2-0 lead, ASU lefthander Erik Averill had scattered three hits through three innings before issuing a pair of walks in the fourth; Lissman then drove a one-ball, no-strike fastball just over the left-centerfield fence to give the Beavers a 3-2 lead.

'I didn't know I hit it out,' Lissman said of his first homer since the final game of last season. 'I saw the guy (ASU leftfielder Colin Curtis) jump on the fence, and I just went, `Oh, man.''

But Curtis couldn't bring the ball back and Lissman had his first extra-base hit since Feb. 25. Last weekend against Washington State, the sophomore outfielder had his first multi-hit game in over a month; he'd started the season batting .394 through the first nine games.

'Coach Casey has been working with me to stay back and see the ball as long as I can. Whatever it takes to help the team, that's all that matters,' Lissman said. 'It's frustrating, but you keep with it. Your teammates pick you up ... we're in it together.'

OSU added three more runs on six singles in the bottom of the fifth against Averill and reliever Ty Marotz, getting run-scoring hits from Drew Barney, Andy Jenkins and Shea McFeely for a 6-2 lead.

Buck allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and four walks, striking out three. He gave way to Gunderson after a single and a walk to open the top of the seventh; Gunderson then came on and got a grounder from Travis Buck that OSU second baseman Chris Kunda backhanded and flipped to shortstop Barney to start a nifty double play.

Tuffy Gosewisch followed with a run-scoring single, though, and Jeff Larish then drilled his 16th homer of the year to pull ASU back within 6-5. It was the first homer allowed by Gunderson this season, and the lefty shook it off to retire the next seven hitters to finish the game.

'I made one bad pitch the entire night, and it was that one,' Gunderson said. 'I was trying to go outside and it went right down the middle into his power zone. He had 15 home runs, and he has 16 now, but then you've got to come back. We still had the lead.'

Jenkins pushed his hitting streak to nine games for OSU, matching his career high. Barney and Shea McFeely were both 2-for-3 for the Beavers.
