OSU Can't Come Up With Key Hit In 3-1 Loss

April 30, 2005

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State couldn't overcome an early deficit and the No. 11 Beavers fell to No. 20 Arizona State 3-1 in Pacific-10 baseball Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. After falling behind 3-0 in the sixth inning, OSU (30-8 overall, 10-4 Pacific-10) put the tying runs in scoring position in the seventh inning and had the tying runs on base in the ninth but couldn't bring them home.

The sellout crowd of 2,012 was OSU's largest home crowd since Goss Stadium at Coleman Field was renovated prior to the 1999 season, with more fans peering over and through the fences surrounding the ballpark. OSU officials apologize to fans who were turned away at the gates and are attempting to add more bleacher seating prior to Sunday's 1 p.m. series finale; the ticket windows and gates will open at 12 noon. The game can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240) and www.osubeavers.com; the Beavers and Sun Devils (29-16, 10-4) have split the first two games after OSU's 6-5 win on Friday night.

On Saturday, OSU lost a conference game at home for the first time this season and for just the third time in 20 home games this spring. ASU righthanders Jason Urquidez and Zechry Zinicola combined on a five-hitter, and four of those hits came as Oregon State scored its lone run in the seventh inning.

'He came out and shut us out from the get-go,' OSU first baseman Andy Jenkins said of Urquidez. 'We struggled early and we needed a little spark. He had good stuff; he kept us off-balance and did a great job.'

Beaver lefthander Anton Maxwell kept the Beavers in the game, scattering nine hits over 6 1/3 innings and allowing just one earned run, but he suffered his first loss of the season after seven victories. It was just the second loss by a member of OSU's weekend starting rotation in 2005.

'We just didn't get enough guys on base early,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'Then late, when we did get runners on base, we couldn't pick up the big hit. They made all the plays they needed to make. I thought Anton pitched fine; he really battled. It's hard when you go out there and you've got zeroes on the board, we couldn't get him any runs. We could have really helped him out there.'

OSU's chance at a big inning came in the seventh, when Andy Jenkins led off with a double to left-center and then Mitch Canham singled him to third. Urquidez got Shea McFeely to ground into a fielder's choice to leave runners at the corners with one out, then Cole Gillespie singled to left to drive in a run and Mike Lissman added a single to right to load the bases.

Zinicola entered the game to face pinch-hitter Geoff Wagner, who hit into a fielder's choice that retired McFeely at the plate. That brought Jacoby Ellsbury to the plate, but the leader in the Pac-10 batting race with a .452 average entering the game grounded to short to end the inning with the score still 3-1.

Ellsbury was 0-for-4, ending his career-best hitting streak at 20 games. Jenkins was 2-for-4, with his ingle in the fourth inning being the Beavers' initial hit and extending his hitting streak to a career-high 10 games.

The Beavers also rallied with one out in the ninth, as McFeely and Gillespie drew walks from Zinicola to put the tying runs on base. Mike Lissman, whose three-run homer had sparked OSU's win on Friday night, flied out to right, though, and pinch-hitter Chris Campos grounded out to second to end the game.

'We gave ourselves a chance to get back in the game and we just needed a big hit,' Casey said. 'We battled our tail off, we just didn't find a way to get a ball to go for us when we needed to.'

Arizona State went up 1-0 without a hit in the first inning as Travis Buck walked, was balked to second, stole third and scored on a passed ball. In the top of the fifth, Andrew Romine led off with a bunt single for ASU and scored on Colin Curtis' double to right-center to make it 2-0.

ASU added another unearned run in the top of the sixth when Seth Dhaenens reached on a two-base error and eventually scored on J.J. Sferra's bunt single. Maxwell and OSU relievers Kevin Joslyn, Jake McCormick and Nate Fogle managed to strand nine Sun Devils, including six in scoring position.
