Caitlin Noble Shuts Down No. 3 California
May. 1, 2005
SEATTLE-- Freshman Caitlin Noble held third-ranked California to two hits this afternoon en route to the 1-0 shutout victory at Husky Softball Stadium in front of 1,188 cheering fans. The win marks the third this week for Washington over a top-10 team. The Huskies also defeated No. 10 UCLA and No. 4 Stanford this week.
The victory improves Washington's record to 27-16 overall and 7-7 in the Pac-10, while the Golden Bears dip to 42-9 overall and 9-6 in conference action.
'After a really tough loss yesterday, to come back and get a big win like this is huge,' said head coach Heather Tarr. 'Yesterday we lost 1-0 and today we found a way to turn it around and get the win. Caitlin and Ashley pitched great games this weekend for us and held a great hitting team to just five hits in two games. We have a big weekend coming up on the road and I hope we can carry this momentum into those games.'
The Huskies scored the game-winning run in the second inning with two outs. Sarah Hyatt drew a walk and Noble singled through the left side. Jacki Hansen then drove a single up the middle of the infield to plate Hyatt from second base.
'I tried to stay calm and focused during that at-bat and not think about the implications,' said Hansen. 'I stayed relaxed and did what I was planning to do which was hit the outside pitch. Hitting Sarah in felt really good.'
Cal put runners on base in six of seven innings but the Husky defense was near flawless. The Golden Bears threatened in the sixth inning, putting a runner on second base with one out but Hansen got the Dawgs out of the jam with back-to-back catches on the run at the left field wall.
Noble (13-7) earned the win and her sixth shutout of the season as she held Cal to two infield singles.
Kelly Anderson (21-5) took the loss as she allowed one run on five hits and struck out one in five innings of work.
Washington returns to action next week with six road games. The Huskies will play a double header at Utah Valley State on Thursday before heading to Arizona to finish a Pac-10 weekend. Washington will play at Arizona State Friday and Arizona on Saturday and Sunday. The Dawgs will play two games on Saturday, resuming the halted game from April 15 in which the Wildcats led 3-0 after four innings.
