No. 9/10 Arizona's Offense Gets 18-4 Win Over No. 22/21 USC
May. 1, 2005
TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 9/10 Arizona Wildcats exploded for a 13-run third inning Sunday for the 18-4 win over the No. 22/21 USC Trojans in Pac-10 Conference action. After being shut out, 13-0, on Friday, the Wildcats stormed back to earn the series victory and remain in first place in the conference with a 12-3 mark.
Four Wildcat players had three hits in the contest as shortstop Jason Donald went 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBI. Trevor Crowe went 3-for-5 with two solo home runs as the Wildcats had 19 hits altogether.
Arizona (28-15, 12-3) also received great relief pitching from Eric Berger (5-0), who came in during the third and threw six scoreless innings. Berger allowed just two hits with a walk and five strikeouts.
USC (27-15, 9-6) took a 3-2 lead in the third after an RBI sacrifice fly from Cyle Hankerd. Crowe, who already had a solo leadoff homer in the first, followed suit with another home run to right to tie the game. The Trojans rolled the dice by putting closer Paul Koss in the game with runners at first and second, but Koss could not record an out as the Wildcats scored a total of 13 runs on 11 hits in the inning. Koss allowed seven runs on five hits while starter Anthony Encinas (3-3) gave up five runs in 2 1/3 innings.
After Koss walked catcher Nick Hundley, the Wildcats had six straight hits before reliever Michael Friedman recorded the second out. However, Arizona had four straight hits after that, including an RBI triple from Jordan Brown and RBI doubles by Hundley and Donald.
Josh Fogel threw 3 2/3 innings for the Trojans and did not allow a run until the seventh on Donald's two-run shot to left. Jeff Clement went 2-for-3 despite the infield shift by Arizona while Baron Frost hit a solo shot to center with his first in the season off the Wildcats' Mark Melancon.
The Trojans will not play until next Saturday (May 7) when they host Cal State Northridge in a 2:30 p.m. game at Dedeaux Field. The game will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker live stats, on usctrojans.com.
