Cal Selected to Compete in NCAA Championships

Berkeley - For the sixth consecutive season and 40th-time overall, the California men's tennis team has been selected to participate in the 2005 NCAA Championships. The Golden Bears (11-9) will face San Diego State (17-5) on Saturday, May 14 at 9 a.m. in Los Angeles.
Should Cal defeat San Diego State, they will play either seventh-seeded UCLA (21-3) or Manhattan (16-4) on Sunday, May 15 at 1 p.m. The winner of the regional championship will advance to the Round of 16, hosted by Texas A&M in College Station, Texas.
Ranked No. 24 in the nation, the Bears are led by senior captain Patrick Briaud and junior Conor Niland, currently No. 13 in the nation in singles. Cal (11-9 overall) matched its highest-ever Pac-10 Conference finish this year, tying for second with a 5-2 record.
Last year, the Bears advanced to the regional championship, picking up their 105th all-time postseason victory with a 4-3 defeat of San Diego in the first round.
