Husky Women Head To LA For NCAA First and Second Rounds

SEATTLE, Wash. - The 25th-ranked Washington women's tennis team earned its ninth-straight postseason berth and will travel to UCLA for the first and second rounds of the NCAA Championships, May 13-14, the NCAA announced today. The Huskies (14-8) will meet 59th-ranked Long Beach State (15-10) in the first round Friday, May 13, while the host Bruins (15-5) will face Illinois State (18-7) at the same site.
The first round winners will play on Saturday, May 14, for the opportunity to advance to the 16-team NCAA finals hosted by the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga., May 19-22. Match times are still yet to be officially announced.
The Huskies have advanced to the Sweet 16 the last two straight years, including a trip to the Elite Eight last season. Washington's 2004 finish equaled a school best, as UW advanced to the Elite Eight in 2001 for the first time in school history.
Washington finished the regular season with an overall record of 14-8, including a 3-4 record against Pac-10 opponents. The Huskies are led by senior All-American Dea Sumantri who is ranked 18th nationally in singles.
The NCAA women's singles and doubles championships will the follow the team championships in Athens, May 23-28. Those individual selections will be announced Thursday, May 5.
