May 4, 2005
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Sophomore right-hander Ian Kennedy has been named Pitcher of the Week for April 26-May 2, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Tuesday.
Kennedy, from Huntington Beach, Calif., struck out 14 batters in eight scoreless innings of work in the Trojans' 13-0 shutout at Arizona on April 29. The right-hander allowed just three hits and three walks against a team that was batting .328 entering the contest. In doing so, Kenedy helped the Trojans hand Arizona pitcher John Meloan his first loss as a starter in two years.
On the season, Kennedy is now 8-1 with a 2.53 ERA, having recorded a Conference-leading 108 strikeouts while issuing just 28 walks in 74 and two-thirds innings pitched. He is now 5-0 with a 1.72 ERA in Pac-10 games with 11 walks and 58 strikeouts, and has registered double digits in strikeouts in four of his last five starts.
The Pitcher of the Week honor is the second for Kennedy and the 56th selection all-time for USC.
