No. 10 OSU Grinds Out Victory Over Portland

May 3, 2005

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Mike Lissman had was 3-for-5 and Nate Fogle pitched the final 4 2/3 innings for the win as No. 10 Oregon State beat Portland 6-2 in non-conference baseball Tuesday evening at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The Beavers (33-8 overall) came from behind twice for the win against the Pilots (14-29).

OSU returns to Pacific-10 play this weekend at UCLA with games Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. All three games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240) and www.osubeavers.com.

On Tuesday, the Beavers were coming off the weekend's emotional series win over nationally-ranked Arizona State and fell behind 1-0 in the third inning and 2-1 in the fifth.

'You switch off the Pac-10 and switch on a Tuesday game, and that's hard to do,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'Sometimes when you play big conference weekends, on Tuesdays it's hard to get the thing going and have that same energy. I think everybody in the country, on a Tuesday, is just trying to find a way to win.'

'I told our guys that sometimes I'd rather win ugly than lose pretty. I thought our guys found a way to win.'

The Beavers took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as two-out singles by pinch-hitter Cole Gillespie and Lissman and a walk to Rob Folsom loaded the bases. Portland's Chris Siegfried then walked pinch-hitter Darwin Barney to force in the tying run, and then the Pilots' Brian Cox plunked the first hitter he faced, Ryan Gipson, to force in the go-ahead run.

OSU added three more runs on three walks, a balk, Lissman's run-scoring single and Joey Ledesma's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth for a 6-2 lead. Lissman, who has 10 hits in his last six games, had his first three-hit game since Feb. 5 against New Mexico State.

Fogle entered the game in the top of the fifth with the game tied 1-1, one out and the bases loaded. One run scored on a passed ball to give the Pilots the lead, but the junior righthander recorded a pair of strikeouts to end the inning and then blanked Portland the rest of the way. Fogle wound up allowing two hits and one walk while striking out six.

Freshman righthander Daniel Turpen had gotten the start and worked 3 2/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits and one walk while striking out one before giving way to Jake McCormick.

'I thought Daniel Turpen's stuff was good the first couple innings, and I was glad to see Nate Fogle come in and pitch - we really needed him to be good and I think that will help us for the weekend,' Casey said. 'We had to use some different players, and I thought a couple guys who hadn't played much did a good job. Turpen's velocity was real good, Rob Folsom gave us some good at-bats, Mike Lissman did a good job again and we didn't make an error.'

OSU's Andy Jenkins extended his career-best hitting streak to 12 games with a fifth-inning single. Tyler Graham stole a pair of bases and is now 17-for-17 this season.

For Portland, Matthew Peters and Justin Ehlers were 2-for-4. Andrew Wrisley gave the Pilots their first lead with a two-out solo homer in the top of the third inning, his first homer of the season.
