The NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Subcommittee selected Stanford as the No. 1 seed for the 64-team 2005 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships, this afternoon. Top-seeded Stanford will host Army, Oregon and Fresno State at the Taube Tennis Center in the first and second rounds of the 2005 championship, as the Cardinal looks to defend its 2004 team title and advance to Athens, Ga. Competition will begin on Friday, May 13, with Oregon and Fresno State playing at 10 a.m. and Stanford playing Army at 2 p.m.

'We have played two of the three teams, so this is a very familiar division for us,' commented head coach Lele Forood. 'We're looking forward to playing the Cadets.'

Stanford earned the No. 1 seed in the tournament after posting a 21-0 record this year. The Cardinal head into postseason play with a 50-match win streak and an 81-match home winning streak that dates back to 1999. Stanford, the 2004 NCAA Champion, has won 13 of a possible 23 NCAA crowns and has played in the title match in each of the last six seasons.

This will be the first-ever match-up between Stanford and Army. The Cadets completed the regular season with an Academy record 23-4 mark and is making its fifth NCAA appearance this season after winning the Patriot League title in April. The Black Knights are 0-4 in the NCAA Tournament and each first-round foe has been a Pac-10 team (1999 & 2003 - California, 2000 - Arizona State, 2001 - Washington).

Oregon and Fresno State will play in the first match at 10 a.m. next Friday, with Stanford playing Army in the 2 p.m. match. The two winners will square off at noon next Saturday for the chance to head to Athens, Ga. Two-day passes are available for purchase by phone through 1-800-STANFORD and single day tickets will be available on competition days at the ticket window.
