Cardinal Women In 12th At NCAA West Regional

Las Cruces, N.M. - The Stanford women's golf team shot a 306 (+18) in the opening round of the 2005 NCAA West Regional in Las Cruces, N.M. at the New Mexico State University Golf Course. The Cardinal are in 12th place heading into tomorrow's second round. Tennessee tops the leaderboard after shooting a 291 (+3), followed closely by Southern California (293), who is only two stroke back. Rounding out the top five are Georgia (296), California (296) and BYU (298).
UNLV (301), Oregon (301), Washington State (302), Arizona (303), UCLA (304) and Oklahoma State (304) round out the top 10 of the 21-team field.
Senior Wendra Liang led the Cardinal today, carding a two-over par 74 to tie for 16th individually. Teammate Jennifer Tangtiphaiboontana is tied for 32nd after shooting a four-over 76. Junior Lauren Todd is tied for 45th with a 77 (+5) while Stephanie Lue is tied for 71st (79) after the first round of play. Cardinal Kelly Husted is tied for 86th (81) to round out the Stanford golfers.
Sophia Sheridan of California birdied three holes on the front nine and two on the back to sit in a tie for first with BYU's Rachael Newren. Newren, who played in the afternoon session, battled back from three bogies on the front nine with a birdie and an eagle on the par-5 12th to jump back atop the leader board.
Four players currently sit in a tie for third at 1-under-par 71. Freshman Marci Turner of Tennessee registered four birdies in her first regional, including back-to-back birdies on the par-4 10th and par-3 11th. Georgia's Whitney Wade, who also finished in a tie for third, fired three birdies in a row on the par-3 11th, par-5 12th and the par-4 13th.
The second round of the 2005 NCAA Division I West Regional will get underway Friday at the University Golf Course with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m. (MT).
