May 5, 2005
SEATTLE, Wash. - Washington senior Dea Sumantri was selected to compete in the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championship, held May 23-28, at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., the NCAA announced today. Sumantri was an at-large selection from the West Region and will be one of 64 players competing for the nation's top honor.
Sumantri, already a two-time All-American, is making her third-straight NCAA singles appearance. As a sophomore she advanced to the singles Sweet 16, and as a junior reached the second round before falling to the eventual champion, Amber Liu of Stanford.
Sumantri was also a doubles competitor last year, reaching the NCAA quarterfinals with Husky All-American Claire Carter. Their run tied the best tournament run by a UW doubles duo. Sumantri is the only Husky to ever earn singles and doubles All-America honors in the same season.
The singles and doubles portion of the NCAA Championships will take place following the completion of the team finals which will be held May 19-22 in Athens. As a team, the Huskies will attempt to make their third straight trip to the NCAA Round of 16, but will have to first get through first-round opponent Long Beach State, Friday, May 13, at 10 a.m. at UCLA. Should the Huskies advance, they will play the winner of the UCLA versus Illinois State match, Saturday, May 14, at 3 p.m., for the right to compete in Athens.
