Suzi Babos to Compete in NCAA Singles Championships

Berkeley - Freshman Suzi Babos was selected to compete in the 2005 NCAA Singles Championships, as announced by the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Subcommittee on Thursday. The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 23-28 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia, following the conclusion of the team championship (May 19-22). The University of Georgia will serve as host.

Babos, ranked No. 8 in singles in the nation, will enter the tournament as the eighth seed. Fellow freshman Cristina Visico was selected as the seventh alternate for the west region.

Babos currently leads the Bears with 30 wins, 17 of which have come over nationally-ranked opponents. In addition to compiling a 15-5 dual record as Cal's top singles player, the Sopron, Hungary native captured the singles titles from both the Cal Nike Invitational and ITA West Regional Championships.

Visico, currently ranked No. 73 in singles, is 23-10 overall, including a 12-match win streak to close out the dual-match season.

The women's team will be traveling to Coral Gales, Fla., next week to face Mississippi in the first round of the NCAA Team Championships.
