Back-to-Back Doubles Provide No. 7 Softball With 2-0 Upset Of No. 2 California
May 6, 2005
BERKELEY, Calif. - Back-to-back two-out fourth inning doubles by Lisa Allen and Brianne McGowan helped propel No. 7 ranked Oregon State University to a 2-0 victory against No. 2 ranked University of California in Friday's Pacific-10 Conference softball action.
McGowan earned her school record 32nd victory of the season as the Beavers (39-10; 12-4) moved one step closer to capturing their first Pac-10 title and earned their second straight victory against the No. 2 ranked team in the country - Arizona on Sunday and Cal (42-10; 9-7 Pac-10) today.
Cal's Julie Meyer picked up the game's first hit, when she roped a two-out double to the left-center field fence in the bottom of the second inning but McGowan recorded her fourth strikeout of the contest to get out of the frame unscathed.
The Beavers broke-up Cal ace Kelly Anderson's (22-6) no-hitter in the top of the fourth when Mia Longfellow led-off the frame with a bloop single to center field. After advancing to second on Vanessa Iapala's sacrifice bunt, Longfellow made the score 1-0 when she crossed the plate on Allen's two-out shot off the left field wall. McGowan went to the opposite field for her fourth double of the year, extending the OSU advantage to 2-0.
McGowan (32-5) continued her dominance in the circle and the Beaver defense played flawlessly behind her. Second baseman Kelly Petersen's diving stop and ensuing put-out of a shot up the middle highlighted the performance.
The Bears picked up a pair of hits in the final inning, but left runners stranded when McGowan finished the game with her sixth strikeout.
Oregon State won the season series with the Bears for the first time since 2001.
The Beavers face No. 4 ranked Stanford on Saturday at 1 p.m.
