Cal Baseball Falls to No.24 Stanford, 7-5

May 6, 2005

BERKELEY, CA - California took advantage of three Stanford errors in the seventh inning and exploded for five runs, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Bears fell to the Cardinal, 7-5, Friday afternoon at Evans Diamond. Cal is now 29-21 overall and 9-10 in the Pac-10, while No. 24 Stanford improved to 27-15 and 8-5 in conference play.

Down 7-0 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Bears took advantage of three Cardinal miscues. With two outs, Stanford third baseman Adam Sorgi made back-to-back throwing errors to first base on balls hit by James Holder and Garrett Bussiere, allowing Brennan Boesch and Holder to score. Sophomore shortstop Brett Munster followed with a RBI single and Travis Howell reached on a fielder's choice after an error by Stanford shortstop Chris Minaker on a force play at second. Junior left fielder Allen Craig then knocked in two runs with a double to right center, but was thrown out trying to advance to third to end the inning.

That concluded the scoring for the Bears as the Cardinal's Matt Manship earned his third save of the year, throwing the final 2.0 innings with one hit and one strikeout. The winning pitcher for Stanford was starter Jeff Gilmore, who improved his record to 8-1 (7.0 innings, six hits, five unearned runs, no walks, two strikeouts). The losing pitcher for Cal was junior right-hander Adam Gold (6-6. 3.3 innings, seven hits, six runs, two walks, one strikeout).

The Cardinal dominated the first part of the game, scoring a run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Jed Lowrie, and two runs in the second on back-to-back home runs by John Hester and Michael Taylor. Stanford added two runs in the third on a two-run homer by Sorgi, a run in the fourth on a RBI single by Chris Lewis and a run in the seventh on a fielding error by Bear third baseman Matt Einspahr that allowed Lowrie to score after a one-out triple.

After Gold struggled in the first three and a third innings, Cal received solid relief pitching from freshman Nick Tess (3.7 innings, one hit, one unearned run, one walk, one strikeout). Seniors Aaron Swick (1.0 inning, no hits, no runs), Travis Talbott (0.7 inning, one hit, no runs) and Matt Swanson (0.3 inning, no hits, one strikeout) also threw well in relief for the Bears.

Cal will next host Stanford in the second game of the three-game Pac-10 series, Saturday, May 7 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.

Home Runs:

Stanford: Hester, solo home run in the second inning. Taylor, solo home run in the second inning. Sorgi, two-run homer in the third inning.
