Husky Golfers Stand 12th After First Round

May 6, 2005

Gainesville, FL - Washington, the number-three seed in the field, was in a three-way tie for 12th place following the opening round of play at the NCAA East Regional at Florida today. The Huskies shot 26-over 306 and are 21 strokes off the lead held by Ohio State. The Buckeyes finished their first round at 5-over 285.

More importantly, the Huskies are 12 shots behind eighth-place Pepperdine. The top eight teams from the field of 21 schools advance to the NCAA Championships.

Husky junior All-American Paige Mackenzie and sophomore Amber Prange both shot 4-over 74 Friday morning to lead the Husky scoring effort. They were tied for 24th place.

Courtney McCracken, making her first NCAA appearance, shot 78 while Sung Ea Lee finished at 80 and freshman Kim Shin carded an 83.

Combined, the Huskies managed just two birdies. Prange had the shot of the day, recording an eagle on the par-5, 49-yard 12th hole.

Host Florida trails the Buckeyes by two shots on the leaderboard while Furman is third at 291. Top-ranked Duke is tied for Virginia at 12-over 292.

Three players managed to break par and lead the field at 1-under 69. That group includes Florida's Tiffany Chudy, Ohio State's Jennifer Selfinger and Furman's Jenny Suh.

The 54-hole tournament is one day behind schedule after steady rains prevented Thursday's opening round. This afternoon the teams will return and attempt to complete the second round. The final round is scheduled for Saturday. If the second round is not completed today, it will resume Saturday morning.
