Lele Forood Named Pac-10 Coach of the Year
May 6, 2005
Stanford, Calif. - The Pacific-10 Conference announced the 2005 tennis awards this morning, and in a vote by the conference coaches, Stanford's Lele Forood has been honored as the Pac-10 Coach of the Year, for the second-straight season. Additionally, four Cardinal were tabbed all-conference, as juniors Alice Barnes and Amber Liu were selected to the first team and senior Erin Burdette and sophomore Theresa Logar were picked to the second team.
Forood has guided the Cardinal to a 132-3 record in five seasons at the helm of the Stanford program, with five Pac-10 titles and three NCAA Championships. Forood has led the Cardinal to back-to-back undefeated regular season records (21-0 in 2005, 23-0 in 2004), and Pac-10 marks (7-0 in 2005, 8-0 in 2004). Stanford was awarded the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the third time in Forood's tenure this week, as the Cardinal seeks to defend its 2004 NCAA title.
First-Team All-Pac-10 honorees Barnes and Liu helped the Cardinal to a perfect regular season, including a 7-0 mark in Pac-10 play as Stanford captured its 18th conference crown. Barnes, who also earned first-team honors last season, finished second at the Pac-10 Individual Championships in April and capture the Pac-10 Doubles title, in Ojai and at the indoor championships in January. Liu, the two-time NCAA Singles Champion, picked up her third-straight selection to the first team after completing the regular season with a 13-2 record in dual meets.
Burdette garnered second-team accolades for the fourth time in her career after finishing the dual season with eight wins. Logar, an honorable mention selection last year, posted a 17-2 record in dual meets this season and advanced to the semifinals of the Pac-10 Individual Championships in Ojai.
All four Cardinal players will compete in the NCAA Tournament, as Stanford will host first and second round matches in the team competition next week and seven individuals will compete in the NCAA Individual Championships.
