May 7, 2005
The No.2 ranked UCLA women's golf team won its second straight NCAA West Regional championship by overcoming an eight-stroke deficit to USC.
The Bruins fired a final round score of 286 (-2), the best single round team score of the tournament. Their 54-hole total of 889 (+25) tied Tennessee for first place. Based on the combined scores of the fifth players over three rounds, the Bruins were awarded the title. With the victory comes the No.1 seed from the West Region.
'It was a great comeback for our team,' said Head Coach Carrie Forsyth. 'I'm really proud of this team and the way that it fought back to win under really tough conditions.'
Windy weather and elevated scores found the Bruins tied for 10th place after the first round. On Friday, they posted the best team score of the day and climbed to fourth place. Led by All-American junior Susie Mathews in the final round, they captured the regional crown on Saturday.
Cal finished third at 891 (+27), followed by USC at 892 (+28). The Trojans were nine-over par on the day. Oklahoma State placed fifth at 898 (+34) and UC Irvine and BYU tied for sixth at 906 (+42). Stanford finished eighth at 908 (+44) and Georgia was the final team to advance to the NCAA Championship by finishing ninth at 911 (+47).
Mathews trimmed 10 shots off her second round score and fired a three-under par round of 69 to lead the Bruins in the final round. One-over par through 10 holes, Mathews reeled off four birdies in her final seven holes to card a three-under 33 on the inward nine. She improved more than 40 spots in the final round and tied for 21st place at 225 (+9).
Freshman Amie Cochran was the Bruins' highest finisher, tying for 10th place at 222 (+6). One-under at the nine-hole turn, she bogeyed the par 5 15th and the par 3 17th for a back nine score of 38 and a final round score of 73 (+1).
Senior Charlotte Mayorkas and sophomore Hannah Jun each turned in even par scores of 72. Mayorkas was one-over par after nine holes and played the final nine in one-under par. Jun, last year's West Regional champion, was two-under par after nine, but played the back nine in two-over 38, despite birdies at both par 5s.
Senior Melissa Martin posted a 77 (+5) in the final round and finished tied for 41st at 228 (+12).
