Huskies Drop Two Games To No. 3 Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz.-- The third-ranked Arizona Wildcats took a pair of games from No. 20 Washington this afternoon at Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium. The teams completed the final three innings of a halted game from April 15 with UA winning 3-0 and the Wildcats handed the Huskies a 9-1 loss in the nightcap.

The losses dip Washington to 28-18 overall and 8-9 in the Pac-10, while Arizona improves to 36-9 and 10-7 in the Pac-10.

Arizona 3, Washington 0

The opening game was a pitcher's duel with Arizona's Alicia Hollowell striking out 17 and UW's Ashley Boek and Caitlin Noble combining for 12 strikeouts.

Arizona scored all of its runs in the first inning back on April 15 in Seattle before the game was halted after the fourth inning due to rain.

Caitlin Lowe led off with a double down the left field line and Autumn Champion was hit by a pitch. Kristi Fox then singled up the middle to score Lowe. Jackie Coburn followed with a bunt single to load the bases. Callista Balko was hit by a pitch to bring in Champion. UW replaced Boek with Noble who walked Jennifer Martinez to score another run before striking out the next two batters to end the inning.

Hollowell recorded the first eight of nine outs via strikeout. Washington got its first hit in the in the fourth inning with a single by Dominique Lastrapes into centerfield but Hollowell struck out the next three batters to end the inning.

The game resumed today in the top of the fifth inning and Boek re-entered the game at pitcher. Boek gave up a leadoff walk to Champion but record three quick outs with a sacrifice bunt and two strikeouts.

Hollowell struck out the next four batters she faced before Ashley Charters hit a single down the left field line but UW could not advance her.

The Huskies put two runners on base in the seventh inning with a walk to Aimee Minor and a single by Noble but Hollowell closed out the game with a fielder's choice to end the game.

Hollowell earned the win as she scattered four hits and two walks with 17 strikeouts.

Boek (10-5) took the loss as she allowed three runs on three hits and struck out four in 3.1 innings. Noble held UA to one hit in 3.2 innings with eight strikeouts.

Washington 1, Arizona 9

The Huskies struck first in the nightcap as junior Sarah Hyatt hit her 13th home run of the season with a blast to left centerfield in the second inning.

The lead was short lived, however, as Arizona scored three runs in the second, four in the third and two in the fifth to earn the 9-1 win.

Balko sparked the third inning rally with a lead off with a walk and Courtney Fossatti followed with an infield single. Washington changed pitchers and Noble struck out the next batter. Lowe then followed with a two-run triple and scored on a single by Champion to take the 3-1 lead.

Arizona scored four more in the fourth inning on four hits and an error. Crystal Farley led off with a double to shallow left field and scored on a fielder's choice. Arizona loaded the bases with singles by Fossatti and Champion. Fox cleared the bases with a three-run double to right centerfield. Coburn hit the game-ending single up the middle to score Lowe and force the mercy-rule.

Hollowell (25-7) earned the win as she held Washington to one run on three hits and struck out six.

Boek (15-11) took the loss for the Huskies as she gave up two runs on two hits. Noble had five strikeouts in three innings of relief.

Washington and Arizona complete the three-game series Sunday at 1 pm. The game will be televised live on ESPN and will be broadcast by KKNW 1150 AM.
