Kennedy Leads The Way In No. 25/24 USC's 9-2 Win Over Cal State Northridge
May 7, 2005
LOS ANGELES - Sophomore Ian Kennedy (Huntington Beach/La Quinta HS) threw six scoreless innings Saturday as the No. 25/24 USC Trojans defeated the Cal State Northridge Matadors, 9-2, in a nonconference game. Blake Sharpe and Cyle Hankerd each had RBI doubles as part of a five-run fourth for the Trojans.
USC (28-15), which had lost four of its last five, got back in the win column on another strong performance by Kennedy. Kennedy (9-1) allowed just four hits with no walks and six strikeouts and has not allowed a run in his last 18 1/3 innings.
In his last six starts, Kennedy is 6-0 with a 1.01 ERA, allowing 31 hits in 44 2/3 innings with five runs, eight walks and 65 strikeouts. For the season, he is 9-1 with a 2.34 ERA (80 2/3 IP, 57 H, 21 ER, 28 BB, 114 SO, .199 opponents' batting average).
The Trojans got a run in the second and third innings before breaking the game open in the fourth. Baron Frost and Lucas Duda hit back-to-back singles with one out, followed by Sharpe's RBI double. Jeff Clement was intentionally walked to load the bases. Billy Hart hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Duda. The Trojans then tried a delayed double steal, but Drew Aguailar's throw from first was off target as Sharpe scored and Clement advanced to second. Hankerd then doubled in Clement and eventually scored on a single by Hector Estrella.
Hankerd, Frost, and freshman Matt Cusick had two hits each for the Trojans.
Jimmy Brettl (1-7) took the loss for Cal State Northridge (17-26-1).
USC's Brett Bannister made his first apperance since March 25 after inflammation in his right elbow. Bannister finished the game with two-thirds of an inning in relief.
The Trojans travel to San Diego State on Tuesday (May 10) for a 7 p.m. game before hosting Washington State (May 13-15) in a Pac-10 Conference series at Dedeaux Field. All four games will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker live stats, on usctrojans.com.
