Benyi's Grand Slam Powers UCLA Past ASU, 6-1
May 7, 2005
TEMPE, Ariz. - UCLA won its second game of the weekend on Saturday evening at Arizona State, posting a 6-1 victory over the Sun Devils. Caitlin Benyi had a grand slam, the team's second of the season, and freshman pitcher Anjelica Selden struck out 13 in the game. With the win, the Bruins improve to 27-15 (8-9 Pac-10), while Arizona State falls to 28-21 (3-14 Pac-10) with the loss.
The Bruins opened the scoring in the top of the third inning, capitalizing on a lead-off single by Lisa Dodd and two Sun Devil errors to load the bases for Caitlin Benyi, who connected on her 7th home run of the season and the second grand slam of the year for the Bruins. Emily Zaplatosch and Jodie Legaspi followed with consecutive singles before Kristen Dedmon grounded into a fielders choice with Legaspi out at second base. In an attempt to turn the double play, ASU's shortstop threw the ball away, making Dedmon safe at first base and allowing Zaplatosch to score for UCLA's fifth run of the inning.
UCLA added a sixth run in the top of the fourth inning when Lisa Dodd led off with her fifth home run of the season, a ball that cleared the Farrington Stadium fence just fair of the left field foul pole to give the Bruins a 6-0 advantage after three and a half innings.
Arizona State got on the board with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a solo home run by Valerie Sevilla, her seventh of the season, to make the score 6-1 in UCLA's favor.
Selden struck out 13 batters in the game, including the side in the second and seventh innings. She had at least one strikeout in each inning of the game.
UCLA completes the weekend schedule with a 1 pm scheduled first pitch at Arizona State's Farrington Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
