Big Sixth Inning Gets Beavers Past UCLA, 10-4

May 7, 2005

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Cole Gillespie's three-run triple capped a six-run sixth inning as No. 10 Oregon State beat UCLA 10-4 in Pacific-10 baseball Saturday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The win moved the Beavers (35-8 overall, 13-4 Pac-10) into a tie for first place with Arizona.

It marks the first time in OSU's 96 seasons of baseball dating back to 1907 that the Beavers have been 27 games over .500. Combined with Friday night's Oregon State win, it's the Beavers first-ever series win at UCLA in six tries.

OSU and UCLA (11-32, 1-13) will conclude their series on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.; the game has been moved ahead 30 minutes to accommodate the Beavers' travel plans. The game can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240) and www.osubeavers.com.

On Friday, Oregon State took advantage of five errors by UCLA and one of those made all six OSU runs in the sixth unearned as the Beavers went in front 10-2. Besides Gillespie's triple, OSU also got bases-loaded walks to Andy Jenkins and pinch-hitter Geoff Wagner to force in runs and a run-scoring groundout by Jacoby Ellsbury.

Gillespie was 3-for-5 for OSU, while Shea McFeely was 2-for-4 with a pair of run-scoring singles and Ryan Gipson was 2-for-3. Jenkins extended his career-best hitting streak to 14 games with a double.

The game may have turned on a play in the bottom of the fifth inning with OSU leading 4-2. Josh Roenicke hit a flyball against OSU lefthander Anton Maxwell that rightfielder Chris Campos lost sight of in the twilight and it fell for a triple. Will Penniall flied out to leftfield and Roenick crossed the plate, but it was ruled that he left third base early and was called out on OSU's appeal.

Maxwell then struck out Chris Jensen to end the inning, and the OSU followed with its six-run sixth inning to break the game open. Maxwell worked six innings for the win to improve his record to 8-1, giving up four runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out seven.

The Beavers had gone in front 4-2 with a three-run fourth inning. McFeely drove in the go-ahead run with a one-out single up the middle, then Jacoby Ellsbury drove a two-out, two-run double down the leftfield line.

OSU had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Chris Campos was hit by a pitch, took third on a single by Gillespie, then scored on McFeely's single down the rightfield line against UCLA righthander Bryan Beck. The Bruins tied it at 1-1 when Brett McMillan led off the bottom of the inning with his seventh homer of the season, lining the ball over the rightfield fence.
