May 8, 2005

PALO ALTO, Calif. - No. 7 ranked Oregon State pounded 10 hits, but the Beavers' come-back bid fell just short as the No. 4 ranked Stanford Cardinal recorded a 6-4 victory in Sunday's Pacific-10 Conference softball showdown.

Stanford (39-12; 12-6 Pac-10) became the first conference team to win the series with the Beavers (40-11; 13-5 Pac-10) on the season. OSU maintains a one-game lead over the Cardinal in the Pac-10 standings, helped in part by winning the season series' against Arizona, Arizona State, California, Oregon, and Washington.

Stanford lead-off batter Catalina Morris gave the Cardinal a quick 1-0 lead when she sent the second pitch she saw over the center field fence in the opening inning. Stanford added another run in the frame behind Erin Howe's two-out bloop single to right field.

The Beavers got a run back in the top of the second when pitcher Brianne McGowan (33-6) belted a double to the left-center field gap and Adrienne Alo, who singled, crossed the plate to make the score 2-1.

The Cardinal responded with two more home runs in the bottom of the second to push its lead to 4-1.

Back-to-back doubles from junior Lisa Allen and McGowan in the top of the fourth inning sparked the OSU offense and knocked Stanford ace Becky McCullough from the contest. McGowan ripped her sixth double of the year with a 2-RBI shot down the right field line, pulling the Beavers within 4-3.

Stanford lengthened its lead again in the bottom of the fifth, using three hits to score a pair of runs.

Senior Kelly Petersen's two-out sixth inning RBI double to right-center field closed the gap to 6-4.

Back-to-back one-out base hits from Cambria Miranda and Mia Longfellow in the top of the seventh brought the winning run to the plate, but Cardinal hurler Laura Severson (15-6) retired the next two batters to close out the game.

Allen continued her hot hitting with a 2-for-3 mark from the plate, while McGowan finished 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles. Miranda added a 2-for-4 clip.

Beaver pitcher Amy Klever struck out two batters and allowed just four hits in four innings of work, while fellow reliever Ta'Tyana McElroy gave up just one hit in the final two innings.

The Beavers head to University of Washington on Thursday for a 1 p.m. game, before closing out the season in Los Angeles with a pair of games against UCLA.
