Morris Homers Twice In 6-4 Win Over No. 6 Oregon State

Stanford, Calif. - Junior Catalina Morris homered twice as the No. 5 Stanford softball team defeated No. 6 Oregon State, 6-4, this afternoon at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal improve to 39-12 on the season, 12-6 in the Pac-10 while the Beavers drop to 40-11, 13-5 in league play.
Stanford jumped out to an early 2-0 as Catalina Morris got things started with a solo homerun to centerfield in the top of the first. With one out, Michelle Smith drew a walk. Jackie Rinehart laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Smith to second. Erin Howe then singled to rightfield, scoring Smith.
OSU got one run back in the top of the second, when Brianne McGowan smacked a double to left centerfield, scoring Adrienne Alo.
Leah Nelson led off the bottom of the second with a solo homerun to centerfield - her seventh of the year. With two outs, Morris hit her second homerun of the game, a solo shot to rightfield, making the score, 4-1.
The Beavers came right back, scoring two runs in the top of the fourth to close the gap to 4-3, off of another double by McGowan.
Lauren Lappin led off the bottom of the fifth with a single to left. Jackie Rinehart doubled to put runners at third and second. Erin Howe singled to left to score Lappin and Rinehart, making the score 6-3.
Morris ended the afternoon going 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored while Lauren Lappin also went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Erin Howe had a 2-for-2 day at the plate with three RBI. Leah Nelson went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Teammate Jackie Rinehart also picked up a hit and a run scored for the Cardinal.
Junior hurler Laura Severson (15-6) picked up the win in relief, allowing only one run on five hits over 3.2 innings of work. OSU's Brianne McGowan (33-6) took the loss, giving up three runs on three hits in one inning pitched.
Stanford wraps up the regular season at home next week, taking on the Arizona schools.
