PACIFIC-10 CONFERENCE OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Pacific-10 Conference outdoor track and field athlete of the week honors for the week of May 2-8:
Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Week: DARION POWELL, WASHINGTON STATE (Jr., Kirkland, Wash.). Powell captured the Pac-10 decathlon crown with a lifetime-best and NCAA Automatic Qualifying total of 7531 points, outdistancing second-place Andy Young of Oregon by 366 points. It was the fifth-best decathlon point total in WSU history and the first Cougar to win the decathlon title since Leo Slack in 1996.
Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Week: JULIE PICKLER, WASHINGTON STATE (RSo., Sachse, Texas). Pickler overtook her twin sister and first-day leader, Diana Pickler, to win the Pac-10 heptathlon title with a lifetime-best and NCAA Automatic Qualifying total of 5569 points. She posted personal-best scores in the 200m (24.38), 800m (2:1.73), and javelin throw (39.33m/129-0). The Cougars have won four of the last five heptathlon events at the Pac-10 Championships. The other three Cougar titles were won by current WSU assistant coach Ellannee Richardson in 2001, 2002, and 2003.
This is only the second time in Pac-10 history that both the decathlon and heptathlon champions have come from the same school. California's Bevan Hart and Missy Vanek won the multi-event titles in 2000.
