No. 10 Beavers Look to Medal at Pac-10 Regatta
May 11, 2005
The No. 10 Oregon State Men's Rowing team returns to the waters of Northern California for the Pac-10 Championship regatta Sunday at Lake Natoma, near Sacramento. The Beavers' first race of the day is set for 8:30 a.m. with the second heat of Novice 8's while the first grand final of the day is scheduled to get underway 12:10 p.m.
OSU top two boats are seeded fourth in their respective divisions while the Novice 8 is seeded third. The Varsity 8's fourth seed comes despite being ranked 10th in the nation, but also shows the quality of competition within the Pac-10 with four teams (No. 2 California, No. 4 Washington and No. 5 Stanford) ranked in the top ten.
'Our crews certainly have the potential to battle the top crews in our conference,' said Head Coach Fred Honebein. 'Having beaten Wisconsin and Michigan early in the year bodes well for us, but we don't want to be satisfied with our rankings. We want to have the best performance possible and see what the results are and where we rank head-to-head.'
OSU's First Varsity 8 and Novice 8 boats need to finish in the top three of their respective heats to advance to the Grand Finals. Only seven Second Varsity 8 boats are entered in the regatta with all seven competing in the Grand Final at 1 p.m.
Oregon State's Varsity 8 is set for a challenge in their heat race rowing against Cal (1st seed), UC Davis (5th), USC (8th), and Sonoma State (9th).
OSU's Novice 8 is scheduled to row against Washington (2nd), Washington State (6th), and USC (7th).
The OSU crews are familiar with the waters of Lake Natoma, which is widely considered the best race course on the west coast, having rowed there at the Windermere Crew Classic in early April and again in duals against Stanford and Cal later in the month.
A strong showing by OSU at this weekend's regatta could extend the season for the Beavers with a trip to the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships at Camden, N.J. June 2-4.
