Santa Clara Tops No. 21 Stanford, 6-5 In 12 Innings

Santa Clara, Calif. - Eric Newton's RBI single with one out in the bottom of the 12th inning brought home David Hoffmire with the game-winning as Santa Clara (25-24) topped No. 21 Stanford (27-18) by a final score of 6-5 in 12 innings at Stephen Schott Stadium on Tuesday evening in a non-conference game that lasted four hours and 16 minutes. Stanford's Michael Taylor (2-6, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, SB) had hit hit a two-run homer with one out in the top of the 10th inning to put Stanford ahead, 5-3, but the Broncos scored twice in the bottom of the 10th to tie the game.
Dustin Realini (3-5, SB) and Kris Watts (2-3, HR, 2 RBI) had multiple-hit games for Santa Clara.
Santa Clara reliever Anthony Rea (4-5) picked up the win by holding the Cardinal scoreless without a hit, while striking out one and walking one over the final 2.0 innings.
Stanford reliever Jeff Stimpson (0-2) took the loss, giving up the game-winning run in 1.1 frames as he allowed two hits while striking out one and walking one.
Stanford returns home to Sunken Diamond for a three-game Pac-10 series against UCLA from Friday-Sunday, May 13-15 (6, 1, 1 pm, PT) to begin a seven-game homestand that will conclude the Stanford's 2005 regular season home schedule. The Cardinal will also host Saint Mary's (Tuesday, May 17, 6 pm, PT) and Arizona (Friday-Sunday, May 20-22, 6 pm, 1 pm, 1 pm, PT) on the homestand.
Stanford will host several promotions during its upcoming seven-game homestand, beginning with Youth Baseball Day and a post-game Poster-Autograph Session on Sunday, May 15. The club's final home series versus Arizona will have a promotional event each day, starting with the popular Town & Country Fireworks Show after the series-opener on Friday, May 20. The annual Team Appreciation BBQ will take place after Saturday's contest with Fan Appreciation/Senior Day slated for Sunday.
