Beavers Finish Seventh, Novice Eight Takes Bronze

May 15, 2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Oregon State's Women's Rowing team had a solid performance at Sunday's Pac-10 Championship regatta but fell short finishing seventh in its final regatta of the season.

'We raced as well as we've been practicing,' said Head Coach Charlie Owen. 'I'm pleased that we were able to race at a level where a lot of people in our boats were able to have personal bests.'

Each of the Beavers' four boats finished where expected with the Novice 8 having the best day finishing third to grab the bronze medal. The Novices rowed a solid race finishing behind Washington and California and managed to hold off UCLA, which OSU had lost to earlier in the season, and Washington State.

'A lot of people in the Novice Eight are coming back next year,' said Owen. 'It will be tough because we lose a lot of seniors but I really expect these freshmen to contribute to the varsity program next year.'

OSU's Varsity 8, which got off to a slow start losing ground early in its heat race, finished three-seconds behind Washington State, the closest the Beavers have been to the Cougars all season, and missed a berth in the Grand Final. In their second race of the day, the Beavs got a good start had a solid outing to win the Petite Final finishing five seconds ahead of Gonzaga to earn seventh overall.

The Beavers' Second Varsity 8 had a similar day to that of the varsity boat, getting a slow start in its heat race which it was unable to recover from. However the JV boat recovered later in the day to win the Petite Final with another solid race to finish seventh overall.

Oregon State's Varsity 4 beat Stanford in its heat race to move into the Grand Final where the Beavers earned a sixth place finish.

'(The Varsity Four field) was the most competitive that I've seen it at the Pac-10 regatta,' said Owen. 'It just shows that our conference just keeps getting tougher.'
