Beavers Sweep Series With 3-1, 10-Inning Win

SEATTLE - After trailing 1-0 throughout the entire game, the Washington baseball team got a two-out solo homer from Nick Batkoski in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings, but third-rankedOregon State scored a two in the 10th to pull out a 3-1 win in the final game of a three-gamePac-10 series Sunday at Husky Ballpark.
In the 10th, UW junior reliever Josh Conover walked the first two OSU batters in the inning.After a sacrifice bunt, Jacoby Ellsbury was intentionally walked to load the bases. Left fielderTyler Graham followed with a bloop single to shallow center to drive in Mike Lissman fromthird. Shortstop Darwin Barney followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.
Both teams got outstanding performances from their starting pitchers, neither of whom figured inthe decision. OSU sophomore Johah Nickerson allowed only one hit and struck out 10 in seveninnings of work. Husky senior David Dowling, a lefty from Juanita, worked nine innings for thelongest outing of his career, allowing one run on four hits.
The Beavers (39-8 overall and 17-4 in the Pac-10) swept the series from the UW to remain atopthe Pac-10 standings with only three conference games yet to play. Washington (27-21 overall,7-11 in the conference) will likely have to win five, if not all six, of its remaining league gamesto have any shot at making the postseason.
Washington tied the game in the ninth. After two quick outs, Batkoski, a senior from FederalWay, belted his fourth home run of the season to straightaway center, the Huskies' first extra-base hit of the weekend series.
Beavers closer Kevin Gunderson (5-2), who gave up the home run, gave up a single in the 10th,but closed the game out to earn the win. Conover (0-2) suffered the loss.
OSU took a quick lead with a run in the first. Leadoff man Ellsbury, who entered the series asthe Pac-10's leading hitter but had gone 0-for-7 in the series, led off with an infield single andadvanced to second on an error. After a bunt moved him to third, catcher Andy Jenkins singledto put the Beavers on top, 1-0.
Washington had its first shot to get on the board in the fifth. With one out, UW catcherJoey Dunn singled for the first Husky hit in the game. After two walks loaded the bases,Nickerson struck out Taylor Johnson and Zach Clem to end the threat.
The Huskies' seven-game homestand continues with four more games in the coming week.Tuesday, the Dawgs play host to Lewis-Clark State, the No. 1-ranked team in the NAIA. Fridaythrough Sunday, Arizona State visits Husky Ballpark for the final three home games of theseason.
