OSU Third at Pac-10's, Novice Eight Rows to Bronze

May 15, 2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Oregon State's Men's Rowing team had a solid performance at Sunday's Pac-10 Championship regatta finishing third.

'Our guys were aggressive and attacked pretty well today,' said Head Coach Fred Honebein. 'We were in position to capitalize on any mistakes by the top boats. Unfortunately nobody made any mistakes. That shows the quality of competition in the Pac-10 right now.'

Each of the Beavers' three boats reached the Grand Finals of its respective events, with the Novice 8 coming away the Beavers' top finish, the bronze medal.

The Novice 8, which had a good heat race, came back for the afternoon race and showed its inexperience against some top competition. Despite having a rough go of things the Beavers hung on to finish third and claim their medals.

OSU's Varsity 8 had an impressive showing, challenging the top three boats staying close with Washington and Stanford, as they battled for the second through fourth positions, through 1,500 meters. But the Huskies and Cardinal were able to pull away in the final 250 meters to keep the Beavers off of the medal stand.

The Beavers' Second Varsity 8 had only one race, Sunday with all seven entries rowing in the Grand Final. The JV boat stayed poised after falling behind early, but put together an unbelievable sprint near the end to finish .3-seconds behind Stanford for third place.

'They came out a little pensive and in the end just ran out of time,' said Honebein. 'They needed another 15 or 20 meters and they probably would have caught (Stanford).'

Oregon State has one more regatta this season at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships at Camden, N.J., June 2-4.
