Buck Named Pac-10 Pitcher Of The Week
May 17, 2005
PORTLAND, Ore. - Oregon State sophomore righthander Dallas Buck was named the Pacific-10 Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week for May 10-16, it was announced Tuesday by Pac-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen. Buck (Newberg, Ore./Newberg HS) pitched a three-hit shutout as the fifth-ranked Beavers beat Washington 7-0 on May 13, starting a three-game sweep of the Huskies.
The game was a duel between Buck, named the nation's top pitcher at midseason by Baseball America magazine, and UW's Tim Lincecum, named both the Pac-10's Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year last season. Both took no-hitters into the sixth inning as the first five frames were completed in a brisk 1 hour, 19 minutes.
Buck walked four hitters and struck out eight; he retired the first 7 hitters he faced and 10 of the first 11. He didn't allow a hit until Taylor Johnson poked an opposite-field single to left to lead off the sixth inning.
The effort earned Buck a place on OSU's list of single-season wins leaders, tying him for eighth as he improved to 10-1 this season, and he moved into fifth place on OSU's single-season strikeout list at 102.
It was the first Pitcher of the Week honor for Buck in his career. It was the second Pitcher of the Week honor for a Beaver this season; Anton Maxwell had been named for the week of Feb. 15-21.
OSU (39-8 overall, 17-4 Pac-10) finishes conference play this weekend at home against No. 20 Southern California, with games Friday at 5 p.m., Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Oregon State will then make up a rained-out game against Portland on Wednesday, May 25 at 3:30 p.m. at Portland.
