Gosewisch Named Johnny Bench Award Semi-Finalist

TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Arizona State University senior catcher Tuffy Gosewisch has been named a semi-finalist for the Coleman Company-Johnny Bench Award. The award is presented annually at the Greater Wichita Sports Banquet to the nation's top collegiate catcher.
Gosewisch (Scottsdale, Ariz.) is one of 10 semi-finalists up for the prestigious award, including Pac-10 catchers Nick Hundley (Arizona) and Jeff Clement (USC). Gosewisch was also a semi-finalist in 2004. The three finalists will be announced June 1, 2005 and will be invited to Wichita for the 8th annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 29, 2005 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Wichita. Legendary Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench will present the award to the recipient.
Through 50 games of the 2005 season against one of the toughest schedules in the nation, Gosewisch is fourth on the team batting .321 (62-for-193) with 10 doubles, six home runs and a team-leading 52 RBI. Defensively, he has started every game this season and has caught all but 18 innings behind the plate. He has made only two errors in 403 chances for a .995 fielding percentage and has thrown out 18 of 52 attempted base stealers (35%).
