Notre Dame Beats No. 21/20, 13-6, In Midweek Action
May 17, 2005
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Craig Cooper and Tony Langford had three hits each Tuesday as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish defeated the No. 21/20 USC Trojans, 13-6, in nonconference action at Frank Eck Stadium. The Fighting Irish produced 17 hits on the evening after a 21-1 rout on Monday at Pitt.
Freshman Steve Martlaro (Diamond Bar/Bishop Amat HS) threw a season-high three innings, allowing just one run on three hits for the Trojans. USC catcher Jeff Clement, a leading candidate for the Johnny Bench Award as the top collegiate catcher, went 3-for-3, pushing his team-leading batting average to .380 on the season.
Notre Dame improves to 30-21-1 on the season while USC (32-16) saw its five-game winning streak snapped.
Billy Hart and Clement hit back-to-back doubles to produce USC's run in the first. The Fighting Irish answered with five runs in the second. Craig Cooper hit an RBI single, followed by a two-run double by third baseman Brett Lilley. Steve Andres singled to center, plating Cooper, and later scored when Matt Edwards' single to left was misplayed by Baron Frost.
Shortstop Blake Sharpe got the Trojans back to within one run, belting a three-run homer to left. Sharpe, who earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors after going 9-for-13 in last weekend's Washington State series, now has four home runs on the season and two in the last three games.
Notre Dame greeted USC reliever Jon Williams with three runs in the third. Cooper and Greg Lopez hit RBI doubles as part of the inning. Tony Langford then knocked out Williams with a two-run home run to left in the fourth, his third on the year for a 10-5 lead.
Three Trojan errors led to two more runs in the eighth despite USC having a .976 fielding percentage before the game. USC had a total of four errors in the game.
Both teams will play another game tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. Central. USC will then travel to Corvallis, Ore., for a Pac-10 Conference series beginning on Friday (May 20) at 5 p.m. Pacific. The series continues on Saturday (May 21) at 1 p.m. and Sunday (May 22) at noon. Gametracker live stats will be available for all four games while the Oregon State series will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
