This Week In Pac-10 Baseball
May 17, 2005
Winners of eight in a row, the Pac-10-leading No. 3 OREGON STATE Beavers host No. 21 USC this weekend in Corvallis. Should the Beavers come away with a sweep of the third-place Trojans, they would ensure themselves of at least a tie for the Pac-10 title. Just beneath the Beavers sit the No. 8 ARIZONA Wildcats, who travel to STANFORD's Sunken Diamond this weekend hoping to keep the pressure on. Meanwhile, fourth-place No. 17 ARIZONA STATE will travel to Seattle for a series with WASHINGTON. Capping off the rumble in the Northwest will be UCLA and WASHINGTON STATE, who will face off in Pullman. CALIFORNIA continues its two-week hiatus, and will resume play May 24 at UC Davis.

USC'S BLAKE SHARPE NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK
OREGON STATE'S DALLAS BUCK NAMED PITCHER OF THE WEEK
USC junior shortstop Blake Sharpe has been named Pacific-10 Conference Baseball Player of the Week and OREGON STATE sophomore righthanded pitcher Dallas Buck has been named Pitcher of the Week for May 10-16, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced.
Sharpe, from Moorpark, Calif., went 9-for-13 (.692) with a triple, home run and seven RBI in three games against Washington State last week. He went 4-for-4 as the leadoff hitter with a home run and career-high five RBI on May 14, reaching safely on all six of his plate appearances. Sharpe helped the Trojans score a season-high eight runs in the first inning, which took 42 minutes to complete. He is batting .301 on the season with three home runs and 28 RBI.
Buck, from Newberg, Ore., pitched a three-hit shutout as the Beavers beat Washington 7-0 on May 13, walking four and striking out eight as he improved his record to 10-1. The game was a duel between Buck, named the nation's top pitcher at midseason by Baseball America magazine, and Tim Lincecum, the 2004 Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year. Both took no-hitters into the sixth inning as the first five frames were completed in a brisk one hour and 19 minutes. Buck retired the first seven hitters he faced and 10 of the first 11; he didn't allow a hit until UW's Taylor Johnson poked an opposite-field single to left to lead off the sixth inning. The effort earned Buck a place on OSU's list of single-season wins leaders, tying him for eighth, and moved him into fifth place on the Beavers' single-season strikeout list at 102.
The Player of the Week honor is the first of Sharpe's career, while it is the 51st such honor for USC. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the first for Buck and the 56th selection all-time for Oregon State.

ARIZONA junior 1B Jordan Brown helped lead the Wildcats to a two games to one series victory over in-state rival Arizona State over the weekend. The Wildcat first baseman tied UA's single-game record with three doubles in Arizona's 18-1 win on May 16. For the weekend, Brown batted .357 (5 for 14) with three doubles and two runs scored. The Pac-10 RBI leader with 72, Brown finished the three-game series against the Sun Devils with six runs driven in, including five in the decisive third game... Senior RHP Sean Rierson picked up his third win of the season in a spot start in UA's series win at Arizona State. The right-hander gave up just one run on eight hits in a season-high 5 2/3 innings in the 18-1 series-clinching victory. He finished with three strikeouts and no walks. The outing helped erase his last start at Arizona State in 2003, in which he game up 10 runs on seven hits in just a third of an inning on the mound.
ARIZONA STATE freshman SS Andrew Romine led the Sun Devils at the plate in the three game series against Arizona, extended his hitting streak to a career-high six games. He is 11-for-22 (.500) over that stretch to raise his season average to .304... Junior OF Travis Buck recorded his team-leading 19th double of the year in the ninth inning of ASU's loss on May 16, extend his hitting streak to 14 games. He leads the Sun Devils in batting average, hitting .385, and sports a .425 mark in 18 Conference games. Both are good for fourth best league-wide. Buck also leads the team and ranks among the Conference leaders in runs (59, 2nd), hits (85, 2nd), and doubles (19, 3rd)... In dropping two of three to Arizona, Arizona State lost the season series to the Wildcats for the first time since 1992.
CALIFORNIA is in the midst of a two-week layoff between games. The Bears last played May 10 - a 5-3 win at San Jose State - and will resume play on May 24 at UC Davis. Cal's 32 wins are already the most recorded by a Golden Bear squad since the 2001 team mustered 34 victories en route to NCAA Regional play.
When Oregon State beat Washington 7-4 on May 14, the victory was sparked by the two Washingtonians in the Beaver lineup, Mitch Canham from Lake Stevens and Shea McFeely from Federal Way. Canham and McFeely hit back-to-back homers in the top of the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie and give OSU a 5-1 lead. It was the first time OSU had hit back-to-back home runs in over two years. Canham finished the day 3-for-4 with 3 runs batted in, while McFeely also had a sacrifice fly and made a pair of sterling defensive plays in the late innings to help the Beavers hold the lead... Jacoby Ellsbury only had 1 hit as OSU swept a 3-game series at Washington from May 13-15, but it was a record-setter. Ellsbury's infield single in the first inning of the series finale was his 84th hit of the season, breaking the old OSU school record of 83 that had been set by Brian Barden in 2001... When Oregon State beat Washington 3-1 in 10 innings on May 15, it was OSU's 39th victory of the season; that tied the Beavers' school record for wins in a season, matching the 1986 team that finished 39-15 and had seven of those wins in the Pac-10 Northern Division tournament and the NCAA Regionals. The 39 wins is the best-ever in a regular season for OSU, surpassing the 1997 team that finished 38-12-1.
STANFORD dropped out of Baseball America's Top-25 on May 16th, marking the first time that the Cardinal were not ranked by the magazine since the final poll of the 1993 season, a streak of 227 consecutive polls... Junior INF Jed Lowrie was 9-for-20 (.450) with four doubles, a homer, eight RBI and a stolen base while hitting safely in all five games last week. He also added five walks and had a .560 on-base percentage, as well as a .800 slugging mark. He had a huge double to spark Stanford's three-run ninth inning rally in a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over UCLA in the series-opener on May 13. For the season, he leads the club with 12 homers (4th, Pac-10) and 57 RBI (t3rd Pac-10), while ranking second on the club in batting average... Junior RHP Jeff Gilmore tossed his second complete game of the season and the fourth of his career in a 3-2 victory over UCLA in the series-opener on May 13. He scattered seven hits and struck out six, while walking just one. Since becoming the team's No. 1 pitcher on April 22, Gilmore has allowed just three earned runs in 28.0 innings of work for an 0.96 ERA. Gilmore is now 9-1 with a 3.13 ERA on the season, striking out 69 in a team-high 95.0 innings of work and allowing opponents a batting average of just .230.
UCLA senior RHP Bryan Beck put an end to a personal 11-game losing streak with a remarkable 8.1 inning effort in UCLA's 4-3 win over No. 21 Stanford on Saturday night. Beck, who improved to 1-9 with the win, allowed two earned runs on eight hits while striking out four as the Bruins earend their first win over a ranked opponent this season. Seven of the eight hits Beck allowed were singles... Junior catcher Chris Denove has thrown out 10 of the last 17 base runners attempting to steal, including a span of seven in a row from May 6 to May 13. Over the last seven games, Denove has also picked off two runners at second base... Right fielder Chris Jensen had his 18-game hitting streak snapped on Sunday as the junior went 0-for-4 in the finale against Stanford. Jensen had tallied a hit in every game since joining the UCLA lineup on April 15 after a hamstring injury sidelined him for the season's first two months... First-year head coach John Savage earned his 100th career victory on May 10 against his former school UC Irvine.
USC sophomore RHP Ian Kennedy struck out 14 batters in seven innings on May 13 against WSU. He allowed one run on four hits with two walks. Kennedy is 10-1 on the season with a 2.26 ERA and 128 strikeouts, while opponents are hitting just .196 against him. He has been red-hot of late, going 7-0 with a 1.05 ERA in his last seven starts with four of those games on the road (at Washington, vs. UCLA, at Cal State Fullerton, at Cal and at Arizona). In 51 2/3 innings, he has allowed only 35 hits, six earned runs and 10 walks against 79 strikeouts. He has registered double digits in strikeouts in five of his last seven starts... Catcher Jeff Clement is batting .368 with 10 home runs and 42 RBI. He has also recorded 39 walks on the year for a .502 OBP... Junior SS Blake Sharpe went 9-for-13 (.692) with a triple, home run and seven RBI against Washington State. He went 4-for-4 as the leadoff hitter with a home run and career-high five RBI on Sat against WSU and reached safely on all six plate appearances. He is batting .301 on the season with three home runs and 28 RBI... Freshman infielder Matt Cusick batting .424 in his last 16 games
After trailing 1-0 throughout the entire game, WASHINGTON got a two-out solo homer from Nick Batkoski in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings, but third-ranked Oregon State scored a two in the 10th to pull out a 3-1 win in the final game of a three-game Pac-10 series May 15 at Husky Ballpark... The Huskies' seven-game homestand continues with four more games in the coming week. On May 17, the Dawgs play host to Lewis-Clark State, the No. 1-ranked team in the NAIA. May 20 through 22, Arizona State visits Husky Ballpark for the final three home games of the season.
WASHINGTON STATE's Brady Everett hit .500 against USC last weekend, going 4-for-8 with two doubles and a home run, while driving home three runners for a 1.125 slugging percentage. The senior leads WSU at the plate this season, hitting .335 overall. He leads the team and is ranked on several individual Pac-10 offensive categories, including home runs (2nd, 14), RBI (t-2nd, 60), slugging percentage (5th, .622), runs scored (10th, 45), total bases (9th, 115) and hit by pitches (t-2nd, 15)... Jay Miller, who led WSU at the plate for three consecutive weeks, is currently second on the team, hitting .325 overall. He entered the Cougar's career hits list last week, recording two hits to take the No. 10 spot on the list with 212 career hits.
