Mackenzie Two Shots Off Lead at NCAAs
May 18, 2005
Sunriver, OR - Washington junior Paige Mackenzie is two strokes off the lead at the midway point of the NCAA Golf Championships at the Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore. Mackenzie battled through tough playing conditions during Wednesdays' second round to move up to ninth place at 4-over 146.
Playing in strong winds that included gusts up to 30 miles per hour, Mackenzie shot 3-over 74. She opened the tournament with a 72 on Tuesday. She is two shots behind four players tied for first place at 2-over 144. That group includes UCLA's Charlotte Mayorkas, Auburn's Diana Ramage, USC's Dewi Schreefel and Pepperdine's Eileen Vargas.
'I was pretty happy with the way I played despite the fact I bogied the first two holes,' Mackenzie said. 'I was hitting the ball solid and just hung in there. I knew bogies were going to happen in these types of conditions. I feel like I'm swinging well, I just have to be patient. '
'She played a really great round of golf,' said Husky coach Mary Lou Mulflur. 'Under these conditions, that was a really great score. Great players rise to the occasion and she knows that this is it, the absolute best of college golf.'
Despite Mackenzie's stellar play, Washington fell back nine spots to 14th place after shooting 30-over 314 as a team during the second round.
'It was a disappointing day,' Mulflur said. 'I felt if we could just shoot something around 300, we would still be in it. We were not able to do that, but there's still two whole days left. We're going to have to play harder these next few days and see if we can get on a little roll.
'The thing we did today that we didn't do yesterday was make some big numbers. We had some double and triple bogies. When you have to count those, they add up in a hurry.
Pepperdine shot 11-over 295 to grab a share of the lead with a 36-hole total of 586. Auburn carded a 296 and is tied with the Waves atop the leaderboard. UCLA is third at 590 while California is fourth at 594. Top-ranked Duke remains in fifth place at 595.
Washington's Amber Prange enters the second half of the tournament in 23rd place at 7-over 149 after shooting 77 during Wednesday's play. Sung Ea Lee was among three Huskies to shoot over 80 during the second round. She carded an 81 to fall back to 78th at 155. Courtney McCracken posted an 82 to finish 88th at 156 while Kim Shin had an 85 to complete play in 125th place at 164.
'It was tough out there,' Prange said. 'There were some par fours that played like par fives. You just have to tackle it one shot at a time. You have to be patient.'
The Huskies will start their third round at 10 a.m. from the 10th tee.
A recap of Wednesday's second round will air on The Golf Channel at 10 p.m. PT. It will replay Thursday at 2 p.m PT. Live scoring of the even can be found at golfstat.com
