Derting Earns <i>The Sporting News</i> All-American Honors

Pullman, Wash. - Washington State linebacker Will Derting has been selected as a second-team preseason All-American by The Sporting News. Kyle Basler, Jason Hill and Michael Bumpus also garnered preseason recognition ranking among the top 20 in the nation at their respective positions.

Derting racked up 93 tackles in 2004, including 11.5 behind the line of scrimmage with 3.5 sacks and earned second team All-Pac-10 honors. The Okanogan, Wash., native's outstanding play continues to gain national attention with the senior also named to the 2005 Lombardi and Lott Trophy watch lists. Derting was also ranked as the No. 3 inside linebacker in the nation by The Sporting News and the preseason favorite for Pac-10 defensive player of the year.

Basler earned the No. 8 spot among the nation's punters, boasting a 42.7 yard career average. The 2004 honorable mention All-Pac-10 honoree boomed a 87-yard punt against Arizona, the longest in WSU history and the second longest in Pac-10 history. Basler was twice named Pac-10 Player of the Week last season for performances against New Mexico and Arizona.

Bumpus was ranked the No. 9 return man in the nation after a stellar 2004 season that saw him return for 391 yards including his first collegiate level touchdown on a 52-yard return against Oregon. The sophomore wide receiver earned second team All-Pac-10 honors for his efforts and was named a Freshman All-American by Bumpus also recorded 318 receiving yards including a season-high six reception performance against No. 1 USC.

Hill racked up 1007 yards in 2004 earning him the No. 18 spot among receivers. The San Francisco native recorded four 100-plus yard receiving games last season, including a career-high 206 against Colorado. Hill earned 2004 second teams All-Pac-10 honors as he notched a school record 12 touchdowns and became just the sixth Washington State player to top 1,000 receiving yards in a season.

The Cougs open their 2005 campaign at Martin Stadium against Idaho Sept. 1.
