Stanford Men's Golf Tied For 10th At West Regional

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford men's golf team is tied for 10th after the first round of the 2005 NCAA Men's Golf West Regional on Thursday at the Stanford Golf Course. The Cardinal shot a 289 as a team to tie with South Carolina, while BYU leads the 27-team field with a 278 team total.

The Cougars lead with a 278 team score, just one stroke ahead of Pepperdine. BYU's Oscar Alvarez carded a 63 to post the top individual first round score, setting a Stanford Golf Course record in the process. The previous mark of 64 was set last weekend by Cardinal standout Zack Miller.

Top-seeded UNLV ended the first day of competition in third place with a 281 team mark, while Arizona scored a 283 and New Mexico registered a 284 to finish the first day in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Arizona's Nathan Lashley and Pepperdine's Michael Putnam are tied for second individually after both shot a 66 on the par 70 (6,742 yards) course.

Rob Grube shot a 69 on the afternoon and moved into a seven-way tie for fifth place to lead the Cardinal. Matt Savage tied for 19th with a 71, while Miller is right on his heels with a 73 that ties him for 53rd. Rounding out the Cardinal performances were Kevin Blue, who shot a 76 to tie for 103rd and Pat Phillips who recorded a 77 to tie for 110th.

The 27-team field will continue competition on Friday and Saturday, with each playing18 holes per day for a total of 54. A daily team score is computed by totaling the lowest scores of four of the five members. The final team score is determined by totaling each daily score.

Tee times for Friday's second round will begin at 7:12 a.m. on the 10th tee and 7:30 a.m. on the first tee, while Saturday's tee times begin at 7:12 a.m. from the first tee and 7:30 a.m. from the 10th tee. The Cardinal will tee off at 11:51 a.m. from the 10th tee on Friday.

There are three regional tournaments, encompassing the current nine regions, being conducted through May 21. A total of 27 teams and six individuals not on selected teams were assigned to each regional site. Ten teams and two individuals not on advancing teams will move on from each regional to the championship finals.

The championships will be conducted June 1-4 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland. Loyola College (Maryland) is the host institution for this year's championships.
