Brianne McGowan Surpasses 300 Season Strikeouts, But No. 6 Softball Falls 1-0 In NCAA First Round
May 20, 2005
MADISON, Wisc. - Sophomore pitcher Brianne McGowan matched her career-high with 12 strikeouts, but the No. 6 ranked Oregon State softball team couldn't come up with hits at the right time and Wisconsin-Green Bay earned a stunning 1-0 victory over the Beavers in Friday's NCAA Regional Tournament.
McGowan dominated in the circle, surpassing the 300 strikeout mark for the season (305), but the Phoenix strung together two of their three hits in the fifth inning and a one-out RBI double by Lynsy Erickson provided the only scoring of the contest.
The Beavers (40-15) had a golden opportunity to score in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore shortstop Mia Longfellow ripped a two-out single to center field. Longfellow proceeded to steal second base - her school record 18th swipe - and advanced to third base after a throwing error on the UWGB catcher. Junior Vanessa Iapala picked up a walk to put runners at the corners, but Phoenix pitcher Stephanie Hansen forced Adrienne Alo to hit a soft liner to shortstop, ending the inning.
OSU fought back to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh as Lisa Allen and Cambria Miranda picked up singles and senior Alana Mendoza drew a two-out walk. Hansen recorded a strikeout however to end the game and give UWGB its first ever postseason victory.
Allen, Miranda and Longfellow each went 2-for-3 on the night.
Oregon State will face tournament host University of Wisconsin on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. PDT. The Beavers must now win four straight games to advance in tournament play.
