PULLMAN, Wash. -- - UCLA starting pitcher Hector Ambriz gave up two runs over eight and one-third innings to lead the Bruins past Washington State 4-3 in a Pacific-10 baseball game, Friday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

The Cougars trailed 4-1 entering the bottom of the ninth before rallying. With one out, Scott Suttmeier walked, ending Ambriz's night.

Brian Schroeder relieved Ambriz and promptly gave up singles to Jason Freeman and Jay Miller. The latter scored Suttmeier to cut the Cougars' deficit to 4-2.

Brant Rustich followed Schroeder to the mound and gave up an infield single to Brady Everett that loaded the bases. The next batter, Jim Murphy struck out on a pitch in the dirt that scooted by Bruin catcher Chris Denove allowing all three runners to advance and make the score 4-3.

Washington State had at least one baserunner in every inning, but went 5-for-25 with men on base and stranded 11 runners.

UCLA broke a 1-1 tie off WSU starter and loser Jayson Miller (2-5) with a run in the fifth. Roenicke led off with a double was sacrificed to third and scored on a fielder's choice.

The Bruins added to their lead in the seventh when Mike Metzger delivered a two-run, two-out single to plate Nolan Rouse and Will Penniall.

After the Bruins took a 1-0 lead in the first, the Cougars tied the game in the second when McAngus led off with a double, moved to third on a Jeff Miller single and scored courtesy of an Ambriz balk.
