No. 7 USC Women's Tennis Falls To No. 2 Florida In NCAA Quarters

May 20, 2005

The No. 2-ranked Florida women's tennis team (22-2) beat No. 7 USC (19-4), 4-2, in a quarterfinal match of the 2005 NCAA Women's Division I Tennis Team Championships at Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Friday (May 20).

The Gators next will face No. 10 Texas, a 4-2 quarterfinal winner over Kentucky, in a semifinal match on Saturday (May 21).

Although USC concludes its season of team play with this loss (Troy's fifth trip to the NCAA quarters in the past seven years), three Women of Troy--Nicole Leimbach, Lindsey Nelson and Anca Anastasiu--will compete in the NCAA Singles Championships May 23-28 at Georgia.

USC's four losses in 2005 were its fewest in a season since the 1986 team lost just 3 times.

The start of the USC-Florida match was delayed 2 hours and 15 minutes because of rain in Athens. The Gators collected the doubles point by capturing matches on court 1 (the No. 9-ranked duo of Jennifer Magley and Zerene Reyes over the No. 45 tandem of Nelson and Anastasiu, 8-3) and court 3 (Boglarka Bercez and Nina Suvak over Judy DeVera and Carine Vermeulen, 8-4).

In singles, the teams started off by trading points in the first four matches. No. 16 Nelson got the first singles point of the day by defeating No. 13 Reyes, 6-1, 6-4, on court 2. Then, Suvak beat Anastasiu, 6-4, 6-4, on court 3, but Vermeulen defeated Alex Liles, 6-4, 7-6, on court 5, followed by No. 77 Bercez's 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 win over DeVera on court 6. The Gators clinched the four-hour match when No. 5 Magley beat No. 9 Leimbach, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, on court 1.
