Stanford Resides In 12th Place at NCAA West Regional

Stanford, Ca - The Stanford men's golf team resides in 12th place after two rounds of the NCAA West Regional at the Stanford Golf Course.

The Cardinal, seeded 16th, put together a round of 291 (four golfers) on Friday. Combined with Thursday's round of 289, gives Stanford a two-day total of 580. Rob Grube had Stanford's best round of the day with an even par-70. Grube tallied a one-under-par 69 on Thursday and resides in sixth place in the individual competition at 139. The two-day leader is Oscar Alvarez of Brigham Young. Alvarez has chalked up a total of 134, six-under par. On Friday, Alvarez shot a 71. On Thursday, Alvarez shot a course record 63, seven-under par.

Nevada Las Vegas, top-seeded at the West Regional and ranked second in the nation, has taken a four stroke lead after competition of the second round with a team total of 558, two-under-par. UNLV is the only school under par in the 27-team field. BYU is second at 562. The Rebels are seeking their fourth Regional title, and their first since 1997.

Stanford's Zack Miller shot a 74 and is tied for 60th after two rounds with a total score of 147, while Pat Phillips carded a 72 to move into a tie for 76th place with a 149 two-day total. Kevin Blue shot a 75 on the second day of play and is tied for 90th place with a 151 score, and Matt Savage rounds out the Cardinal competitors with a two-day total of 155 that ties him for 116th place.

The 27-team field at the NCAA West Regional (Stanford) will play a final round of 18 holes on Saturday to conclude the 54-hole competition. Saturday's tee times begin at 7:12 a.m. from the first tee and 7:30 a.m. from the tenth tee.

There are three regional tournaments, encompassing the current nine regions, being conducted through May 21. A total of 27 teams and six individuals (not on selected teams) were assigned to each regional site. The other sites, besides the NCAA West Regional at Stanford, are the Central Regional at Notre Dame, and the East Regional (hosted by the Southeastern Regional) in Kingston Springs, Tenn.

Ten teams and two individuals (not on advancing teams) will move from each regional to the NCAA Championships which will be conducted June 1-4 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland. Loyola College (Maryland) is the host institution for this year's championship.
