Anna Grzebien shot a tournament-best 6-under 65 on Thursday to help top-ranked Duke take an eight-stroke lead over Auburn with one round left in the NCAA Division I women's championship.

Duke, nine strokes behind Auburn and Pepperdine after the second round, had a 6-under 278 total Thursday -- counting the top four scores from the five-player squad -- to finish at 21-over 873 on the Sunriver Resort's Meadows course. The Blue Devils, the 1999 and 2002 champions, won the NCAA Fall Preview in September at Sunriver.

Grzebien, a sophomore from Narragansett, R.I., who won the NCAA East Regional two weeks ago for her first college title, offset an opening bogey with seven birdies to top the individual standings at even-par 213. Duke teammate Brittany Lang (68) and UCLA's Charlotte Mayorkas (73) were four strokes back at 4 over.

Defending champion UCLA was third in the team race at 30 over, followed by Pepperdine (33 over), California (38 over), Arkansas (44 over) and Ohio State (45 under).

Niloufar Aazam-Zanganeh added a 71 for Duke, Jennifer Pandolfi shot a 74 and Elizabeth Janangelo had a 75.

Auburn was 11 over in the third round. The Tigers' Nicole Hage shot a 70 to move into a tie for fourth in the individual standings at 5 over, Abigale Schepperle had a 74, Margaret Shirley shot a 75, Diana Ramage added a 76 and Maria Martinez had a 77.
