Anderson Lifts California to Regional Title Game
May 20, 2005
FRESNO, Calif. - Senior Kelly Anderson tossed her sixth career no-hitter and the second in California softball postseason history to pace the Bears to a 9-0, five-inning victory over BYU Thursday and into the Fresno State Regional championship game.
Cal (48-12) advances from the loser's bracket and will face host Fresno State (43-10), which is undefeated at the regional, at 3 p.m. on Saturday. A Bear victory forces a second game against the Bulldogs at 5:30 p.m. while a loss eliminates Cal from the NCAA Tournament.
The Bears' Thursday win came a day after the Cougars defeated Cal, 3-1, in the regional opener. BYU (46-14) was no-hit by Fresno State's Jamie Southern in a 3-0 Bulldog win earlier in the day and is eliminated.
Cal wouldn't have had the chance to avenge the loss to the Cougars if not for a 4-3 defeat of Long Beach State earlier in the day. Catcher Haley Woods breathed new life into Cal's postseason when she slapped a two-out, two-strike, two-run double in the top of the seventh to lift the Bears to victory.
'These wins tell me this team has a lot of heart and character and that they want the season to go on,' Cal head coach Diane Ninemire said. 'We had to dig deep today to get here and I expect the same type of effort tomorrow. Hopefully we can begin where we left off today.'
Anderson (25-7) walked the third Cougar she faced but put the clamps on the BYU hitters after being staked to a five-run lead in second inning. She set down 11 consecutive hitters until walking back-to-back Cougars in the fifth. In the process, Anderson, who no-hit North Carolina and Saint Mary's earlier in the season, became the first Bear since Jocelyn Forest in 1999 to toss a postseason no-hitter.
Cal added one run in the third and was able to shorten the game with three more in the fourth. Shortstop Chelsea Spencer, designated player Emily Friedman and right fielder Alex Sutton all had multiple hits for Cal while third baseman Vicky Galindo and Woods each collected a pair of RBI. Spencer added two runs.
