Caitlin Noble Drives In Winning Run Vs. Creighton In 11th Inning
May 20, 2005
LINCOLN, Neb.-- The top-seeded Washington softball team (32-20) used RBI-singles by Sarah Hyatt and Caitlin Noble in the bottom of the 11th inning to defeat Creighton (44-12) 2-1 this evening in the opening game of the NCAA Regional Tournament. Washington will face Nebraska tomorrow in the winners bracket at 11 am (PST).
'All game I was getting jammed horribly, so I tried to get off the plate and get my hands inside,' said Noble. 'I just waited for her to go outside and I took it to right field. Hats off to Sarah Hyatt for staying tough with two outs and bringing in that tying run. At that point, I just wanted the game to end so I was trying to make hard contact and put the ball into play and hopefully bring that winning run across.'
Pitchers Ashley Boek and Tammy Nielson dominated the game, giving up just two hits apiece before the 11th inning. Boek struck out 18 batters to tie the school record, while Nielsen struck out 10.
Creighton broke open a scoreless game in the top of the 11th when Lauren Flores drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second by Melanie Dorsey. Christine Fukumoto then hit a single up the middle to score Flores and give CU the 1-0 lead.
The Huskies put a runner on base in the bottom half of the frame with one out when Kristen Rivera was hit by a pitch. Nielsen recorded the second out of the inning with a foul out. With a full count, Aimee Minor kept the Huskies alive with a flare into left field to move Rivera into scoring position.
Sarah Hyatt then lifted a fly ball into shallow centerfield to score Rivera to tie the game 1-1. The Huskies won the game with Noble's single through the right side of the infield to score Minor.
Boek (18-12) earned the win as she held the Bluejays to four hits over 11 innings with three walks and 18 strikeouts. The 18 strikeouts set a UW postseason record, as did her 11 inning complete game. The start marked Boek's 124th of her career to tie the school record while she became just the second player in UW history to amass 800 career strikeouts. She now has 813 strikeouts.
Nielson (28-7) took the tough loss as she scattered five hits and four walks over 10 2/3 innings with 10 strikeouts.
Host Nebraska defeated Iowa 4-0 earlier today. The Huskies and Huskers will play in Saturday's winner's bracket game at 11 am (PST). Creighton and Iowa will play in the elimination game at 2 pm with the winner playing the loser of the UW/Nebraska game at 5:30 pm.
