Kelly Petersen's Grand Slam Powers No. 6 Softball Into Regional Championship
May 21, 2005
MADISON, Wisc. - Senior second baseman Kelly Petersen belted a sixth inning grand slam home run to help lead the No. 6 ranked Oregon State softball team to a 5-0 victory against University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in Saturday night's NCAA Regional Tournament. Oregon State advances to Sunday's championship game against DePaul University.
The grand slam was the first of Petersen's career and marked her second homer of the day and the 27th long ball in her four seasons at OSU - the second highest total in Oregon State history.
Sophomore pitcher Brianne McGowan (35-9) continued her tear in the circle, tossing her 11th complete game shutout of the season (second place in the Beaver record book) and amassing 10 strikeouts. The 6-2 hurler has recorded 38 strikeouts in Oregon State's three tournament outings, raising her season total to 331.
The game started nearly identical to the contest with Wisconsin, as sophomore shortstop Mia Longfellow ripped a triple to right-center field. The Beavers failed to get on the board however as the Phoenix was able to throw Longfellow out at the plate on Alana Mendoza's fielder's choice. Vanessa Iapala ripped her 16th double of the season - one shy of matching the school record - with a shot off the wall in left-center field, but the Beavers could not get on the scoreboard.
The scoreless tie was broken in the top of the fifth when junior outfielder Ingrid Lochelt sent a one-out pinch hit sacrifice fly to right field and Adrienne Alo - who opened the inning with a double - tagged up and crossed the plate.
UWGB threatened in the bottom of the fifth when they had runners on second and third with one-out, but McGowan forced the next two Phoenix batters to pop-up in the infield to end the frame.
A pair of two-out walks separated by freshman Cambria Miranda's double to the left-center field fence loaded the bases and set up Petersen's dramatic shot in the top of the sixth.
Petersen finished with a 2-for-2 clip in the game, while Iapala added a pair of hits.
The Beavers are making their third consecutive appearance in the Regional Championship. Sunday's first pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m. PDT.
